I carry a fixation with the chorus since a long time. Maybe because of this, it was inevitable somehow that this concept ran throughout my album listening and also did the reflections that wakened from it. By chorus I mean a group of people that generates a joint action. The chorus leads us to meet or to split, shaping melodic and waving sequences. It made us breathe all in all, connect, look at each other, but also feel. To feel the rhythm, to feel the pause, to feel the silence and each voice, each layer -or track in this case- that is building the chorus.
I believe that understanding the compilation of Woman in Power (WIP) Vivas, Libres y Unidas as a chorus allows us to generate an extended, wider vision; a vision which eludes the review of the technical and virtuous -about which knowledgeable people could expand on during a large period- a vision that seeks to unite and to articulate the diverse voices that form this great chorus. A chorus which is felt from the literal/vocal in the overlapping voices appearing off and on, as well as the echoes of the beats. Nevertheless, I invite you to understand, to sense and to feel this album brought by WIP as a brilliant chorus, as one voices net in which each track is one voice; one voice that if we want to, we can listen to by itself, but also that we can understand in connection with the other tracks, with the other voices, as a whole; a great heterogeneous chorus, sounding and dissonant facing the mainstream; a chorus that also tosses our bodies deep inside. It tosses us because it makes us feel part of the chorus itself, as the chorus unavoidable comes together with the collective. It is from the inside of the collective that a non-linear path shows up, a path naturally choral. With it we raise, fall and hold on, as sea waves that expand, retreat, explode, get calm and come back.
The choral path of the album operates as metaphor of the perseverance of the feminist fight, the political aspect and the pursuit of other strategies for this fight. This has everything to do with the form, with the quest to spread an idea, to declaim and to demand, not only through the literal of the content but also through the form. In the form, in the means of production the political aspect can be found, Argentinian Lola Proaño-Gómez tells us; and a concrete example of this is the musical jewel that WIP is providing us with. A fight for our rights, our complaints, our demands from the music, but above all, from the collective point, from the chorus that strongly rises with the slogan ALIVE, FREE AND UNITED we want us, and that we will not back up.
